The recall covers just the 2013-2015 Pathfinder. Nissan insists there aren't any other vehicles with these switches.

It's not deja vü if this all feels familiar. Nissan issued a similar recall in 2016

Wondering how that repair went? Well, let's just say all the 2013-2015 Pathfinders involved in this recall were also involved in the 2016 campaign. So I'm going to go with ... not great.

A busted brake light switch can do more than just make your brake lights wonky. It can also trigger the vehicle's brake override feature which results in limited engine power.

That’ll likely cause fuel to leak out and error code P0087 to trigger the check engine light. However the seals used to “fix” the leak have failed and now the pumps have been recalled again.

Nissan is even worried enough to ask owners of the 2015-2017 Murano, 2016-2017 Maxima, 2017-2018 Pathfinder and the 2017 Infiniti QX60 vehicles to park their cars outside and away from things you wouldn’t like to see turned to ash.

Maybe I should direct my choice words at Nissan instead.

Nissan Recalls Ignition Switches That Are Inadvertently Turning the Engine Off

Certain Nissan vehicles are shutting themselves off while driving thanks to busted ball springs in the ignition switch, with a hearty assist from heavy keychains.

In August 2017, the ignition switch supplier (Alpha Technology Corp.) told Nissan a problem occurred during manufacturing of the ignition switch ball springs. New tests were created for the ignition switches and how they would function on rough roads during vibrations of the vehicles.

Tests concluded that those ball springs are giving out way too early. And without springs to support the weight of heavy key chains bouncing around on bumpy roads, the ignition is slipping itself from the “on” to “accessory” position.

To make sure drivers don’t suddenly find themselves cruising down the highway with their radios on and their engines off, Nissan is recalling over 150,000 vehicles.

If this all sounds familiar you might be thinking of Chevrolet’s long nightmare with faulty ignition switches. In fact, maybe now is a good time to mention the Chevrolet City Express has found its way into an otherwise all Nissan lineup of recalled vehicles. Seems like more than a coincidence.

The one key difference is that Nissan’s airbag systems have an electrical capacity reserve, which means they should still stay on even with the ignition in the “accessory” position. Chevy owners weren’t so lucky.

Anyone else remember what the world felt like before all these Takata recalls? I’m starting to forget considering the first one came all the way back in May of 2013. I’m pretty sure the air smelled sweeter, the birds all sang in harmony, and I didn’t cry overtime I heard a word ending in “ata.”

Anyway, I guess these batch recalls are our new reality. Nissan announced they’re pulling back 53,000 Versa sedans and hatchbacks to replace the passenger-side airbag inflators.

West-coast Nissan owners may soon be getting reimbursed for timing chain repairs thanks to a recent settlement. Under the settlement, affected owners and lessees are entitled to partial reimbursement for money spent in connection with the diagnosis of, repair to, or replacement of the primary or secondary timing chain systems or components.

Alternatively, those owners and lessees may receive a voucher to be used toward the purchase of a new Nissan vehicle ... Reimbursement percentages are based on the mileage of the vehicle at the time of repair, and a vehicle with more than 120,000 miles at the time of repair is not entitled to reimbursement.

The settlement covers owners of the following in California or Washington State (sorry Oregon):

2004-2008 Nissan Maxima

2004-2009 Nissan Quest

2004-2006 Nissan Altima (VQ35 engine)

2005-2007 Nissan Pathfinder

2005-2007 Nissan Xterra

2005-2007 Nissan Frontier (VQ40 engine)

Oh, and in case you’re wondering why the offer stops at 120,000 miles, court documents reveal that’s the full life expectancy of vehicles, according to Nissan.

Between that revelation, timing chain problems, and transmissions choking on coolant, any 2005-2007 Frontier, Pathfinder, or Xterra owner that makes it past 120,000 miles should probably go play the lottery.

The car will come to a complete stop when you lift your foot off the e-Pedal, which Nissan says will be a more "exciting and engaging way to drive."
Nissan owners are tired of their timing chains whining, buzzing, ticking, and knocking their engines apart. In the case of Kobe Falco, et. al., v. Nissan North America, Inc., and Nissan Motor Company, LTD., the plaintiffs say they were forced to pay for expensive timing chain repairs which happened to fall ever-so-conveniently just outside of Nissan's warranty period. Earlier this year, the class-action was certified by a judge.

So now Nissan has brought together their best engineers and a top-notch legal team to come up with their defense –– ok, our timing chains are noisy, but they're not a safety defect.

From CarComplaints.com:

"According to the automaker, there has never been anything defective about the timing chain systems and the most that owners can show is that the timing chains make noise, not that the systems are a safety risk. Nissan says the plaintiffs admit no crashes are attributed to the timing chains, even though the majority of the vehicles have been in service more than 10 years."

So the case will attempt to answer are Nissan's timing chains just loud and annoying? Or are they loud, annoying, and potentially dangerous?

The vehicles named in the suit all use the same uniform timing chain system: the 2004-2008 Maxima, 2004-2009 Quest, 2004-2006 Altima (VQ35 engine), 2005-2007 Pathfinder, 2004-2007 Xterra, and the 2005-2007 Frontier (VQ49 engine).

The steering wheel lock nightmare is over (well, at least for some). Years of complaints and countless warranty claims have finally forced Nissan's hand as the automaker announced they will issue a service campaign for 243,000 vehicles with ESCL problems. Service campaign, recall, banana ... whatever you want to call it, Nissan.

The campaign is only for the 2009-2010 Altima, Altima Coupe, Altima Hybrid, and Maxima cars. They all come equipped with ESCLs that lock the steering wheel when the cars are parked and turned off.

By now I'm guessing you've heard about the dangers of Takata airbags, but here's a quick recap:

Over time Takata airbag inflators are susceptible to moisture.

Investigation into Cracked Radiators Killing Transmissions? Don't Count On It

Certain Nissan vehicles have a defective cracked radiator that leaks coolant into the transmission fluid, creating a toxic hell stew that kills the transmission entirely. If it hasn't happened to you, you've probably at least heard of it. And if you haven't heard of it, well ... I'm sorry to be the bearer of some really bad news.

Unfortunately, the news gets worse. There were high hopes that the government would open an investigation that would lead to a recall, but we now know that ain't going to happen.

A Petition to Nowhere ∞

After being petitioned in 2012 by the North Carolina Consumers Council (NCCC), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into the 2005-2010 Nissan Frontier, Pathfinder, and Xterra. It's taken four years, but NHTSA has a conclusion:

"[Out] of 2,505 complaints, 638 relate to stalling engines and vehicles that are unable to maintain speed, symptoms that could cause safety hazards. But according to NHTSA, the majority of complaints (1,867) aren't considered a risk to safety."

They did find four crashes related to the problem, but say the majority are "customer satisfaction issues." Yeah, you can say satisfaction is an issue.

Extended Coverage That Covers Nothing ∞

"NHTSA says Nissan did issue a warranty extension in 2007 for the transmission oil cooler and radiator that provided owners with an 8-year/80,000 mile warranty. Then due to a class-action lawsuit in 2010, Nissan Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra owners received extended warranty coverage for certain repairs for 10 years or 100,000 miles."

That's all fine and good, but let's take a look at some of the average mileages when this problem gets reported:

101,599 miles in the 2005 Pathfinder

113,121 miles in the 2007 Pathfinder

103,005 miles in the 2005 Frontier

107,181 miles in the 2007 Frontier

111,834 miles in the 2006 Xterra

And so on. Isn't it convenient how the extended warranty expires just barely before the problem happens?

When airbag supplier, Autoliv, was conducting some routine side curtain airbag testing they noticed something alarming --- the reinforcement stitching in the airbags sent to Nissan wasn't securing the airbag properly. The improper stitching is enough to cause the airbag to tear at the sewn seam when the airbag deploys.

Nissan is recalling 402,000 vehicles, mostly Infiniti vehicles, with dangerous Takata airbag inflators. This latest round of recalls has been split into what the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is calling "zones" across the country.

See the full list of recalled vehicles.

Takata's metal inflators are at risk of exploding because they don't contain a drying agent called desiccate. Over time, the ammonium nitrate inside the inflator can become unstable when exposed to heat and humidity. If they do explode during an airbag deployment, metal shrapnel shoots throughout the cabin, injuring or killing the people inside.

Nissan, like other automakers, doesn't have enough replacement parts to fix their vehicles. This is the largest recall in US history with 70 million cars affected and parts are scarce.

Owners should get an initial recall notice in the mail, and then another when parts become available.

Nissan says there is a space between the impeller and the fuel pump cover, a vacant area that can hold detached plating particles and cause the impeller to stop rotating.

If this sounds familiar, Nissan issued a recall for the same exact thing last year. They just forgot one teeny, tiny detail --- to recall all the affected vehicles. Hopefully this expansion fixes that.

Let's face it --- whether you're talking about a car or sitting at the dinner table, gas leaks are never a good thing. Nissan knew it had a problem back in August when they recalled 6,000 new Maximas because gas was getting out.
The automaker is expanding the recall to include:

Any 2016 Maxima built between Februrary 10 and August 18, 2015.

Any 2013-16 Altima with a 3.5L V6 engine that was built between March 30, 2012 and August 18, 2015.

Last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into braking issues in over 600,000 vehicles. Owners with certain 2013 and 2014 cars had been complaining that their pedals went to the floor in a terrifying moment of complete brake failure.

Well, this is terrifying --- a 2006 Sentra owner suffered hearing loss and multiple cuts and burns from flying metal shrapnel when the passenger airbag exploded during a minor accident. The issue is due to dangerous Takata airbag inflators. Early reports suggest that Nissan has expanded their earlier recalls to now include 45,000 Sentras from the 2004-2006 model years. But there's a catch...

Nissan has gone against the wishes of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) by regionally limiting the expansion. Takata claims their inflators will only deteriorate in areas of high heat and humidity. But this is the same company that was fined $14,000 a day for not cooperating with an investigation and possibly destroying evidence, so take that for what it's worth (i.e. not much).

For now, the recall is limited to vehicles sold or registered in:

Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Additional areas include American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

There is no word on when the recall will begin, but owners should keep an eye out for an official notice in the mail. You can contact Nissan at 800-647-7261 with any questions.

The class-action is currently only for current and former Nissan owners (and lessees) who live in New York, Florida, Maryland, and New Jersey. However, this could lay the groundwork for other states.

Loose and busted timing chains are a longtime nightmare for many 2004-2010 Nissan owners.
Spring is in the air, so I hate to dredge up bad news from the depths of winter but I want to make sure you heard about Nissan and Infiniti's January recall of problem that can quickly limit your visibility.

The problem: A manufacturing error caused the hood release cable to be installed incorrectly. That can prevent the latch from, well ... latching. Once that happens you're at risk to have your hood fly up while driving.

The recalled cars: The 2013-2014 Nissan Pathfinder and Pathfinder Hybrid, as well as the 2013 Infiniti JX35, 2014 Infiniti QX60 and the QX60 Hybrid.

The fix: Dealers will change the angle of the hood release mechanism to make the latch release cable longer.

At the time it was announced, Nissan (parent company of Infiniti) didn't know when the recall would begin. It's entirely possible that it already has. Have you received a recall notice in the mail?

Owners with questions or concerns should contact Nissan at 800-647-7261.

Rogue Recalled for Airbags Deploying Too Late

You know the phrase "better late than never"? I don't think that's universally true. Take airbags, for example. An airbag that doesn't deploy when it's supposed to is dangerous, but an airbag that deploys after you've been in an accident? Well that's just adding insult to injury.

Unfortunately for 2013 Nissan Rogue owners there are multiple reports of delayed airbag deployments. In some cases the airbags shoot out minutes after a crash. That has sparked a preliminary investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

So far all NHTSA is saying is the complaints are "unusual." I'm hoping they didn't spend too many of our tax dollars were spent reaching that conclusion. If NHTSA finds something substantial they'll likely upgrade the investigation to an engineering analysis or could recommend 195,000 2013 Nissan Rogues be recalled. If that happens, we'll let you know.

Plus a Passenger Airbag Sensor Issue? ∞

A late deployment isn't the only airbag related complaint about the 2013 Rogue. Multiple owners have noticed the passenger airbag turning off while an adult is in the seat. Have you noticed that too? At this point, it's too early to tell if the problems are related.

Roughly a year after an investigation was opened into inaccurate fuel gauges Nissan has agreed conduct a "service campaign" for the 2007-2009 Quest. How does a service campaign differ from a recall? A recall is a fix related to a safety issue and some are federally mandated. A service campaign is issued by the automaker to upgrade or repair your vehicle for something that isn't necessarily safety-related. Now, this is where the line gets grayed because I would categorize running out of fuel on a crowded highway as a serious safety defect, but Nissan doesn't. You say tomato, I say car crash.

In any event, the issue appears electrical in nature:

"Nissan says the gas gauge can give inaccurate levels because of problems with resistors in a circuit in the sender unit. The automaker found one of two resistors could open and cause false gas gauge readings when the tank goes below one quarter of a tank. Gas would be used out of the tank all while the gas gauge said a quarter of a tank was available."

To fix it, Nissan dealers will install an external amplifier box with jumper harnesses to bypass the resistor's electrical circuit.

Next time you leave your vehicle in park, don't count on it being there when you get back. According to Nissan a problem with the transmission can make it impossible to actually get your vehicle in park.
Own a 2007 Nissan Quest? You might want to think twice about passing a gas station without filling up next time. That's because the Quest is currently under investigation for a gas gauge that can be off by as much as 60-80 miles. The inaccurate readings are leaving drivers stranded, sometimes in dangerous situations. One North Carolina driver said it's happened to her twice, once with her grandchildren in the van.

"Driving along in peak traffic and suddenly vehicle shuts off. No power steering and almost involved in accidents both occasions the first time I was alone the second time I had my grand babies with me and that was terrifying for them as the other road users were whizzing past..."

We've all probably been guilty of taking our cars to the last drop of gas after the fuel warning light comes on, but in the Quest's case there is no such warning. One minute you're rocking out to Hootie and the Blowfish -- or, you know, whatever the kids listen to these days -- next minute you're stranded on the side of the road.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says they've received numerous complaints, all within the past 14 months. This is still just a preliminary investigation, but we will notify you if a defect is found.

Nissan is recalling 1 million vehicles because a defective Occupant Classification System (OCS) might stop the passenger-side frontal airbags from working. If that sounds familiar, it's because they issued the same – albeit smaller – recall last year. But now Nissan admits the problem is more widespread than they anticipated and their previous fix didn't work.

The OCS is supposed to turn on the airbag when there's an adult in the front passenger seat. but it's malfunctioning.

"Nissan says a combination of factors could cause the problem, such as high engine vibration at idle when the seat is initially empty and then becomes occupied. Even the posture of the passenger could cause the air bag to deactivate."

The recalled cars include the 2013-2014 Altima, LEAF, Pathfinder, Sentra, the 2013 NV200, plus additional Infiniti vehicles.
Nissan is part of a massive 3-million vehicle recall for explosive, unstable airbag inflators manufactured by Takata. To be clear, when an airbag deploys there's always going to be a miniature explosion to make the inflation possible. But that explosion is controlled. In the case of Takata, the propellant used to make that explosion can deteriorate over time and cause dangerous –– possibly deadly –– issues when the airbag deploys:

"Takata said the propellant wafers produced at a plant in Moses Lake, Washington, between April 13, 2000 and September 11, 2002, may have been produced with an inadequate compaction force. The propellant could deteriorate over time and cause too much combustion, which could cause the body of the inflator to rupture during air bag deployment."

When that inflator canister ruptures, metal shards can shoot out into the cabin. Most of the recalls are expected to begin in May, 2013.

Last October, Nissan extended their radiator warranty for what they called a “small percentage” of vehicles that may experience issues with coolant leaks. Namely, how those coolant leaks seep into the transmission and render it useless.

While the automaker has offered an extended warranty for the radiators, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and other safety organizations have received numerous complaints from owners alleging they have spent thousands of dollars for transmission repairs because the added radiator warranty coverage only applied to vehicles with fewer than 80,000 miles.

Because it’s an extended warranty, and not a recall, Nissan isn’t obligated to tell owners about it. And, for those who know, it isn’t exactly clear if the radiator warranty extension covers damage done to the transmission by the leaking coolant.
